In the fictional universe of the .hack franchise, The World is the mega-popular
MMORPG created by the CC Corporation for the ALTIMIT OS operating system.
Released on the Virgin's Kiss fictitious holiday, it is the first online game after the
Pluto's Kiss virus incident that crashed the entire internet in 2005. As of 2008 it
has over 20 million players. Players interact with The World using Virtual reality
headsets and DualShock-like controllers. The World is distributed by the
CyberConnect Corporation.
Based on its portrayal in the four .hack video games, The World appears to
have a largely menu-based interface (despite the drawbacks of such an
interface in a realtime environment) and to be based around small parties of up
to three users, entering instanced combat areas, with a few common central
cities. PVP play is highly limited. In this way it more closely resembles Guild Wars
in play than most current MMORPGs.
